Commenting on the speech to the TUC conference today by the Shadow Business Secretary, Chuka Umunna MP, Head of Employment & Skills Policy at EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, Tim Thomas, said:

"We welcome Labour's plan to continue with industrial strategies where these have been seen to add value. From 2015 the next government, whatever its political make-up, must focus on better balanced growth, and we've still got a long way to go to achieve that."

On proposed changes to Employment Tribunals, Tim Thomas added:

"Employers will be keen to ensure Labour’s plans for Employment Tribunals do not lead to a rise in unsubstantiated claims. In keeping with fees required for most other types of legal dispute, those for employment tribunals must be large enough to prevent speculative claims, but not be an unreasonable barrier to genuine claimants. Employers have faced a steep and sustained rise in employment tribunal claims over recent years, with only a small number resulting in a finding against the employer. We look forward to working with the Labour party on these issues."
