Commenting on the manufacturing data in the Labour Market statistics published today, Ms Lee Hopley, Chief Economist at EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, said:

“These figures highlight that, despite a more uncertain economic outlook overall, manufacturing employers are continuing to recruit at a strong level.

"Employment prospects in the sector are at their best for some time with no sign there will be any let up in demand for highly skilled and talented engineers. Manufacturing continues to offer some of the best opportunities of any sector, especially for young people.”

Workforce jobs in manufacturing increased by 1.2% in the second quarter. This marks the sixth consecutive quarter of growth, the first time this has happened since 1993-95. Combined with the news that manufacturing vacancies have risen by an impressive 37% over the year this suggests the employment in the sector is on track to meet our forecast of 0.8% growth in 2014.
