EEF comments on European Commission's work programme

Commenting on the European Commission’s work programme, Terry Scuoler, Chief Executive of EEF, said:

“If the Commission lives up to its plan to clear the decks and focus on growth and jobs, then this will be a step in the right direction. Industry will be cheered by moves to strengthen and extend the single market and remove unnecessary red tape.

“President Juncker’s focus on the single market as the EU’s jewel in the crown is as important for business as it is for Britain’s membership, as it is one of the key reasons why the UK is better off in the EU. That said, a plan is one thing - delivering it is quite different. The Commissioners will need to move quickly and in unison to make this work. They can’t afford to dither. Equally, cutting red tape while maintaining the current high levels of social support will be a difficult balancing act - without strong growth the social model as it is today will simply not survive.”
