Commenting on the European Commission’s Digital Single Market Action Plan announced today, Ms Lee Hopley, Chief Economist at EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation said:
“The Commission’s Action Plan on digitising European Industry balances value adding activities at EU level while joining up initiatives already underway within member states that are forging ahead with the fourth industrial revolution. The Commission rightly notes that the role of EU institutions should be to build on, complement and support the scaling up of national initiatives.
“The benefits of this industrial transformation for UK industry will be maximised where companies have access to a supply chain that is digitally enabled, using common standards which is where action at European level will add benefit. This helps to explain why 3 in 4 UK manufacturers want the UK government to push for the completion of the Digital Single Market across Europe. The UK government must also go even further and set out a modern industrial strategy to ensure UK industry can quickly capitalise on this agenda.”
