At a joint press conference with Donald Tusk in Beijing, Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the EC, today called for the Chinese Government to curb its over production of steel http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_SPEECH-16-2523_en.htm.
Commenting on the speech, Gareth Stace, Director of UK Steel, says: “The over production of Chinese steel has been a massive elephant in the room and I applaud Juncker today for his plain speaking and courage in broaching this tough subject.
“He has provided a timely and much-needed reality check along with sensible proposals to help address the global steel crisis. At the same time, he showed an iron fist wrapped in a velvet glove by making it clear that for the EU there is a clear link between China’s steel overcapacity and its much-desired market economy status. Whether the hint has been taken or not remains to be seen, but seeing the EU stand up for the European steel sector in this way will certainly have won admirers here in the UK.”
