A lens manufacturer has its eyes firmly trained on future success after receiving support and funding to train staff and improve its processes.

Essilor, the leading manufacturer and wholesale distributor of optical lenses in the UK, based in Thornbury near Bristol, has undertaken an intensive course of training and business improvement after receiving £36,000 funding from the Skills Funding Agency. The company was supported in its bid by EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, which worked with the firm to identify where it would see the biggest efficiency improvements and then helped it to successfully secure the funding.

As a result, the company has just celebrated completing an 18-month training and systems overhaul that has enabled it to cut costs, improve innovation and boost staff morale.

The project was managed by Lean Education and Development and Essilor estimates that the new practices it has implemented as part of the overhaul are projected to save it over £4,000 per year. As part of this, staff were trained in a cutting edge manufacturing technique called Lean, which is used by most leading global manufacturers today.

Mike Kirkley MD at Essilor Ltd., says: “We are committed to high standards of innovation and our staff have a critical role to play in this. Their collaboration and involvement allows our business to grow and improve, becoming ever more efficient and better at what we do.

“The funding we received has allowed us to involve our staff even more – bringing in exciting new techniques and processes that have shaved £4,000 in costs off our business. Undoubtedly this has helped us get in good shape for the future. Everyone here is feeling very confident about our future prospects and this is in no small part down to the support we have received from both EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, and the Skills Funding Agency.”

Christian Warden, Programme Director for Engineering Skills at EEF, says: “Innovation is a critical factor in manufacturing success. By securing this crucial funding and investing in its staff and innovation, Essilor can look forward to future growth. We’re delighted to have been able to help Essilor on this important journey.”
