Commenting on today’s speech by Jeremy Corbyn MP, Stephen Phipson CBE, CEO of EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, said:
“The acceptance today, by the leader of the opposition, of the need for a post-Brexit customs union reflects what EEF and UK manufacturing have long called for. Manufacturers have been vocal about the complexity of the supply chains between the EU and UK in which they operate, and that free and frictionless trade can only be achieved by comparable customs rules to those that the UK currently enjoys.
“However, how Labour could practically achieve this and maintain a close relationship with the Single Market and EU agencies, and have a say in future trade deals, remains unclear.
“EEF will continue to work across the political spectrum to provide the proper detailed advice which will result in the best possible outcome for the manufacturing sector.”
