Commenting on proposals for teachers to take sabbaticals including in industry, Verity Davidge at EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation said:

“We have long called for teachers, in particular STEM teachers, to spend time in industry and today’s proposal for teachers to have the opportunity to take a sabbatical including in business ticks this box. There are multiple benefits to both employers and teachers by taking forward this proposal; teachers can learn how the STEM subjects they are teaching in schools are applied, employers can showcase the job opportunities available to the next generation and there can be a two way understanding of  employers and teachers’ expectations of young people leaving the education system.

“To be successful this initiative will need genuine buy-in from the teaching profession and industry so that teachers opt for their chosen sabbaticals to be spent in local business. It will be important to get the detail right and we will be consulting closely with our own members in preparation for the consultation.”
