Commenting on the speech by the Prime Minister on Industrial Strategy, Stephen Phipson, Chief Executive of EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, said:

“The industrial strategy is a whole of government endeavour so it is fitting to see the Prime Minister take the lead in setting out the next steps around Grand Challenges, a crucial catalyst for various elements of the industrial strategy. These Grand Challenges are issues society will have to grapple with even in the absence of an industrial strategy, but placing a strategic framework around it, involving public and private collaboration, will help to deliver the maximum economic benefit for the UK. Today's examples of missions beneath each challenge will serve to bring them to life, enabling people, businesses and places across the UK to bring forward ideas on the appropriate response.”

On the PMs announcement that the UK is seeking full participation in EU programmes, Stephen Phipson said,

“UK-EU collaboration on research and development has so far been missing from the debate around our future relationship with the EU, the Prime Minister brought this into sharp focus today and set out the Government’s commitment to full participation in future programmes. This will be welcomed by industry as the UK has been the most successful country in terms of participation in the current framework programme, while also punching above the rest in securing 15% of funds out of the EU-28. This clear commitment from the Prime Minister should provide reassurance to current programme participants negotiating their involvement in the next framework programme.”
