Forterra is a leading manufacturer of a wide range of clay and concrete building products, used extensively within the construction sector.  It employs over 1,900 people across 18 facilities in the UK.

We are the second largest brick and aircrete block manufacturer in the country and the only producer of the iconic London Brick. Other trusted brands from Forterra include Thermalite, Conbloc, Ecostock, Butterley, Cradley, Red Bank, Jetfloor and Formpave, and Bison Precast.


We are seeking to employ and train 8 apprentices across 7 different sites.

The first year of your apprenticeship will be a combination of residential training in Birmingham and on the job learning in our manufacturing sites during academic holidays. In year 2 you will work towards your BTEC level 3 which will include block release to EEF. Years 2, 3 and 4 will involve more hands-on practical learning where you will be supervised and trained to rectify plant malfunctions and breakdowns safely, to enable the continuity and productivity of the plant.

As part of the maintenance team you will learn how to carry out preplanned preventative maintenance routines, install new equipment as required and isolate machinery to make it safe before dealing with fault diagnosis.

You will need to be able to manage your EEF workload to deliver assignments on time along with your day to day work responsibilities.

Training to be provided


  • Engineering Basic Skills training – off the job full time at EEF in Aston, Birmingham.
  • NVQ level 3
  • A Technical Certificate: BTEC Diploma or City & Guilds Level 3

  • Personal, learning and thinking skills award

Desired qualifications



A minimum of 3 GCSE’s, or equivalent, including English and Maths at grades A* -C (9 -4)



Things to consider



Shift work will be required on completion of apprenticeship, which may involve early starts and late finishes.

The residential option will involve staying in a hotel, with access to their facilities from Sunday night to Friday morning, that is organised and funded by EEF and Forterra. EEF have a 24-hour emergency line and we work in partnership with the hotel to ensure upmost safeguarding and security for all of our students.
