After a successful showing at WorldSkills 2017 - when four EEF apprentices took home Silver and Gold in the industrial controls category - EEF will once again coach four of its engineering apprentices in the annual competition.

This year, Jeevan Tamae from Severn Trent Water and Michael Quinn from UTC will compete in the industrial controls category, and Liam Yates and Liam Campkin from Birmingham Specialties and Aaron Burnett from Alcon will compete in the CNC milling category. The apprentices, who all train with EEF at the Technology Hub in Birmingham, will be coached by two EEF tutors - Richard Pugh and Dave Burnett. Tutor David Smedley will oversee EEF's representation overall, providing expert guidance as a coach for last year's competition entrants.

David Smedley, Senior Technical Tutor comments: “It is fantastic that we are once again involved in entering our apprentices into the WorldSkills competitions, this year we have built on our success in Industrial Controls and have expanded into entering the CNC Milling competition as well – with five apprentices in total being part of the competitions. We are really proud of those apprentices who have put themselves forward to compete and myself and the other tutors are providing them with as much support as they need. We have started preparing for the regional heats and are confident in our apprentices abilities, it is great to be part of a nationwide event that is raising the profile of the engineering sector."

We'll keep you updated on the team's progress throughout the year.
