EEF's Manufacturing Outlook, published on Monday, showed that manufacturers saw strong growth in the last three months, in contrast to weaker PMI figures seen last week. The weaker PMIs will have been partly due to temporary factors and our survey shows that manufacturers remain confident, particularly with regards to external demand.
The KPMG/REC report on jobs, released today, appears to reinforce the message that there is strong underlying growth in the sector. The survey showed that although the pace of recrutiment has slowed across the economy as a whole, the Engineering sector had some of the strongest demand for new workers. However, they did warn - as we also noted in Manufacturing Outlook - that skills shortages are starting to become an issue for growth.
