Car production figures in 2013 showed that the UK overtook France. Where is UK car output headed in 2014?

As we noted earlier this year on our twitter feed, 2013 car production figures showed that the UK overtook France in car production; with France seeing a continued decline in output, and the UK’s figures continuing to rise.

What’s the outlook for total 2014 car production?

Year-to-date car production figures from SMMT show that the UK is in a similar position to 2013, with total production for 2014 reaching 1.28m units in October 2014 compared with 1.29m units by October in 2013.

Extended summer shutdowns hit production figures in the middle of the year with August output falling by 22.1%. Previously announced investments and new models came on stream this year, boosting the industry. However, slowing global conditions and uncertainty will certainly have an effect on the sector, as 80% of UK built cars are exported.
