The Fourth Industrial Revolution: so many terms, so little time

Manufacturing is undergoing a transformation to the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) – but what is it?

4IR is being driven by connectivity, big data and other rapid advances in technology. Eight in ten manufacturers say that this next industrial transformation will be a business reality within the next ten years.

EEF and Oracle have joined forces to try and demystify what the 4th industrial revolution actually is. We are exploring manufacturers’ experience with and understanding of 4IR, what they want to achieve for their business and how they think digitisation and new technologies will support them.

We have already kicked off with a series of focus groups with manufacturers around the UK and will culminate in an Executive Report that will help industry leaders to identify the key barriers, enablers and drivers of 4IR.

First of all, however, on Monday we’ll be publishing a factcard that looks at:

  • What 4IR is all about;
  • How it will make manufacturing smarter;
  • What the four different revolutions are;
  • And, what manufacturers will be investing in.

We’re also working to ensure that the UK business environment supports manufacturers in their adoption of connected technologies by ensuring we have a digital infrastructure network that is fit for purpose.

Keep an eye for the factcard, and in the meantime read our work to date, on our hub at
