Week Ahead 19 September

We will have a quiet week for economic data in the UK. The attention will be kept on the Fed’s decision on a possible interest rate hike and the manufacturing PMI for the euro area.

Fed’s decision on monetary policy due next week

The FOMC members are meeting on 20-21 September and will have to decide on whether or not to raise interest rates. Data have been mixed since the last FOMC meeting in July. GDP figures for the second quarter of this year came below expectations and inflation remained weak. In contrast, labour market indicators continued to strengthen. Markets anticipate interest rates to be kept unchanged at the September meeting, expecting such a move rather in December.

Manufacturing PMI for the euro area

The Manufacturing PMI for the euro area, Germany and France will be released on Thursday. Manufacturing PMI moved downward in August to 51.7, with France and Italy printing below the 50 no-change mark, likely to be affected by Brexit-related uncertainties. The September data will give us more insight on Eurozone business sentiment post-Brexit.
