Future proofing manufacturing starts with inspiring our youth

Over the past month there has been a major focus in the Twitter-sphere and elsewhere about how we as an industry can future-proof.

Whether we’re talking about emerging technologies that hold exciting opportunities for manufacturing, or the ongoing transformation of the general manufacturing image from ‘boy’s only’ to all-inclusive, it’s clear to me that to effectively future-proof manufacturing, the industry must invest more in encouraging and inspiring today’s youth.

That’s why it is important to support a multitude of social action campaigns, such as the recent National Apprenticeship Week and the ongoing #BeBoldforChange campaign that was central to the International Women’s Day social media movement. At the core of these campaigns is the goal of inspiring the nation’s young people for a brighter tomorrow.

For manufacturing in particular, these campaigns are essential. At EEF, we fundamentally believe that apprentices are key to the future success of the industry and fostering an early interest in the sector is an important goal for industry leaders now.
