Under the Equality Act (the Act) it is unlawful in most circumstances to discriminate on grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation. These are known as protected characteristics and they are explained on this page. All protected characteristics have equal standing.
