Since the abolition of the default retirement age in April 2011, the issue of when to retire is primarily a decision for the employee. If an employee is forced to retire against his or her wishes because of age, that amounts to a dismissal, and can lead to a successful claim of unfair dismissal and age discrimination, unless, as an employer, you can objectively justify a fixed compulsory retirement age, which is extremely difficult.
