Manufacturers' attitudes towards external finance

Our survey data indicates that manufacturers remain reluctant to access bank finance, almost ten years since the onset of the financial crisis. This is despite manufacturers – pre-Referendum – planning for solid levels of investment and being confident they would secure finance if they needed it.

Qualitative evidence suggests that manufacturers remain disengaged from the banking sector with the legacy of the financial crisis still playing a significant role in their attitudes towards external finance.

The absence of product diversity, small differences in price, lack of transparency and poor banking relationships have also been cited as important factors. Our survey aims to test this evidence base and quantify manufacturers’ attitudes to external finance.
