The EEF Innovation Monitor Survey 2017/18 highlights the on-going prioritisation of investment on innovation in the past three years. While the development of new and improved products remains critical in meeting customer requirements and cementing manufacturer’s position in global value chains, process innovation is becoming ever more important.
However, new process innovation technologies are not being diffused quickly and widely enough across manufacturing supply chains and as a result productivity gains are highly concentrated among some firms that are close to the global technology frontier. This has led to a growing productivity gap in recent years according to the OECD. The report makes recommendations on how to bring more manufacturers closer to the technology frontier.
