Why BS8888 matters

Whether a company manufactures relatively simple mechanisms which have barely changed in decades, or develops highly complex aeronautical systems which rapidly evolve from day to day, there is, and has always been immense pressure to reduce costs across the process of designing, development, manufacturing, and distribution. These costs can be reduced in a number of ways, and as is explained below, BS8888 can be of great benefit in this cost reduction process.

General Background to BS8888

BS8888 is a set of standards relating to the layout of technical drawings, the various ways of indicating required dimensions, the way in which tolerances and surface finishes are identified, as well as the recognised systems for adding other annotations, symbols, and abbreviations. It works to allow interpretation of a technical drawing by persons with minimal engineering experience and even with limited grasp of the language in which the drawing was first created. This is largely thanks to the recognised set of symbols, etc. that are associated with BS8888.

Efficiency and Effectiveness

If all engineers adopted their own working conventions then, although drawings would be easy for the original draughtsperson to understand, any other engineers may struggle to interpret the drawing correctly. This can either lead to mistakes being made or, if an engineer has to have the drawing translated or explained to them, it may lead to slower progress being made.

Faster progress, better efficiency, and fewer mistakes being made lead to an overall improvement in staff morale. This in turn leads to a more productive workforce helping to increase revenue thanks to increased productivity.

Fewer Errors

Operating to a standard will ensure that everyone in the supply and manufacturing chain can easily pick up and understand what is required in terms of dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish. This means that you will see fewer supplier problems, more accurate parts and components, and a reduction in errors during manufacturing.

A reduction in the number of mistakes being made, as well as having a huge improvement in staff morale, also reduces costs significantly. This is mainly achieved by reducing wastage in terms of scrapped materials but also by removing the costs associated with shipping incorrect parts and components.

Your customers are not interested in the exact processes and procedures used to get a result. Instead, their intention is to use companies that can make their products, services, and business better; in other words, they are really only interested in the quality of the finished product.
