A General Certificate in Health Safety without examsA recent article in Health & Safety at Work discussed the myriad of different health & safety qualifications available to those who wish to drive their career forward. It also gave some insight into what employers are looking for in their candidates.

The Health & Safety at Work article makes a very interesting reading and challenges the approach of relying on the old favourites of NEBSOH certificates and diplomas.

It seems that many employers are now looking for a HSE Manager candidate to have a professional membership rather than just a qualification. However, there is still a common misconception that these are the same thing.

The table below offers some clarity:

Initial Qualification Additional requirements  Membership Grade
Certificate (QCF Level 3)  Proof of practical experience  Technician (Tech IOSH)
Diploma (QCF Level 6)  None required Graduate (Grad IOSH)
Diploma (QCF Level 6) 2 years professional development & a panel interview  Chartered (CMIOSH)

If the key driver for employers is indeed the membership grade rather than the qualification, it opens up a whole new route to that health & safety role you’ve been looking for. One that doesn’t necessarily have to be achieved in the exam hall.

The EEF/Oxford Brookes University Certificate in Health & Safety offers a practical “hands-on” approach to gaining the Tech IOSH grade.

The course features three modules:

  • Module 1 – Health & Safety Management
  • Module 2 – Health & Safety Technology
  • Module 3 – Occupational Health & Hygiene

These modules can be delivered in 3-day blocks with an assignment after each, or as a 9-day course with three assignments at the end.

There are national and international versions, and the course can also be tailored for company-specific delivery.

Assessment is completed via three 2,000 word assignments, with not an exam in sight.

The deliverers of these course will be consultants who will bring the subjects to life with their real-life experience and expert knowledge.

If you need to attain Tech IOSH, but have always been concerned about the intense training and exam-based assessment, the EEF/Oxford Brookes Certificate should be a good fit for you.
