President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports. He said steel imports would face a 25% tariff and aluminium 10%.

 

He then tweeted that the US had been "decimated by unfair trade and bad policy". However, critics argue that the tariffs would fail to protect American jobs and would ultimately put up prices for consumers.

UK Steel Director, Gareth Stace said, “This would be a unilateral, and extremely blunt, approach to what is a complex global problem of overcapacity in the steel sector. This requires a coordinated global approach.”
