Demand Side Response – DSR – enables steelmakers and other energy users to gain commercial advantage from the flexibility in their electricity demand.
It involves users increasing, decreasing, or shifting their electricity use, in response to a signal, to help balance the national electricity system. Steelmakers operating electric arc furnaces are especially well placed to provide DSR due to the relatively flexible nature of this highly electricity intensive process. However, some degree of DSR can be provided at any site, including those operating coke ovens, blast furnaces and other continuous processes.
This UK Steel briefing note on using flexibility in electricity demand to reduce electricity costs should help members to understand the opportunities available.
Earlier this year, UK Steel also published a guide to Energy Policy Costs Relief Measures. This is also available here.
