Representing the Sector

As the voice of the steel industry, we interface with government and parliament – in both London and Brussels – to influence policy so that it underpins, rather than undermines, the long term success of our sector.

We have led the fight for the sector by harnessing the power of the media to compel government to take action. Whilst there is of course more work to be done, a few of our recent achievements can be seen below.

We also work with the All Party Parliamentary Steel and Metal Related Industry Group which brings together Members of Parliament and Peers with steel interests.

Achievements

Representing-the-sector---Achievements

- Through UK Steel’s intensive campaigning, it was announced at the end of 2015 that State Aid approval had been granted for the Energy Intensive Industries Compensation scheme. The package is worth approximately £45 million per annum to the steel sector.

- The Government has committed to permanently exempt the sector from renewables policy costs.

- Through our work with the Cabinet Office and others, guidance has been published to ensure social issues are taken into account when procuring major projects, unlocking significant opportunities for the steel sector.

- Through UK Steel’s interventions the UK Government has voted in favour of anti-dumping measures, called an emergency Competitiveness Council meeting in Brussels and has pushed for the modernisation package to be accelerated.
