How to think like a wolf before booking a venue

John Turpin, business support & development manager  for EEF Venues, a group of three AIM gold accredited venues, has just completed the Wolf Run for the second consecutive year with his wife, Sarah.

This gruelling 10k run across raw natural terrain, including open ground, woodland, lakes & thick mud is not for the faint-hearted. Running in a pack, or as a lone wolf, participants tackle a series of tough obstacles - both man-made and natural - designed to test mental & physical strength, skill and stamina.

Those who complete the course are honorary wolves.

John shares how his experience as a wolf can help event planners overcome obstacles and challenges ahead.

  1. The Wolf Run is not a race; it’s a physical and mental challenge that every Wolf Runner tackles in their own way. The same can be said of event planning. Don’t rush into booking a venue until you have all of the details clear – including what is included and what isn’t. Hidden extras can trip you up when least expected.
  2. Like Wolf Runners, you have to throw yourself into the experience whole-heartedly to get the most out of it. So get 100% involved in the pre-booking experience by always meeting the venue manager and the venue team face-to-face. Visit the venue, or better still, stay over-night to experience the customer journey from a delegate’s perspective.
  3. Pushing yourself to the limit is what the Wolf Run is all about. But how pushy are you when it comes to negotiating costs with a venue? To get the maximum value from a venue, never divulge budget until after receiving an initial estimate. Review cancellation terms; if they are too strict it may say something about the transparency of other elements. Always ask for a discount, and never, ever make a booking based on cost alone.
